At the height of the Howard Dean bubble, an obscure blogger named Markos Zuniga, who calls his blog Daily Kos, took the next step in the evolution of computers and politics.
He switched to Scoop.
Dean's campaign was using Movable Type, the same program used here. It's a nice blogging program, with many community features.
But it can't scale the intimacy like Scoop can. And this, as I've said, is where Dean failed. When millions of people "ran to the rail" and sought the same intimate experience with the Dean campaign as those who'd trickled in the year before had gotten, Movable Type could not deliver.
Because of Scoop Zuniga's blog, called Daily Kos, can deliver. Not only does it enable registration, but it gives registrants real power. They can create their own "mini-blogs" and have these entries displayed no Kos' main page. Registrants can create their own "hotlists" of stories they care about. Scoop can not only handle a lot of traffic, in other words, but a lot of data, a lot of interaction -- far more than Movable Type's threads can handle.
The irony here is that Zuniga actually worked with Dean during the summer, in Burlington, and no doubt saw the wave of traffic coming. He was able to crest that wave on his own, but was unable to get that needed change through Dean's campaign.
Thus Dean failed, and Kos went on. His blog doesn't offer the best writing in the world, nor the best political analysis, but compare it from a technical perspective to other popular liberal blogs, like Josh Marshall's TalkingPointsMemo or Atrios. These are private soapboxes, wholly dependent on the talent of the people running them. Kos, at this point, could probably survive himself.
What's the next stage? The collapse of the Dean campaign has set the technological progress of the Democratic Party back at least a year. Kerry won by stamping out the grassroots and has a bureaucratic attitude (although hiring Zack Exley was quite clever). Dean campaign manager Joe Trippi was not a technologist, he was an enabler for technologists -- a boss who gave them their head.
The next stage is for Kos, or someone like him, to be given charge of a real campaign. If someone who really understands software, and who can scale intimacy (in a technological sense) is given charge of a major campaign -- by any candidate left or right -- we'll see something. Especially if that candidate commits to the medium as Dean did, and energizes people half as well as Dean did.
Stay tuned.

At a range in price from around $1000.00 to over $3000.00+ for a full-on race prepared model, they are not cheap, but these are by far the lowest priced ticket into the world of competition motorcycle racing (or any other kind of motor racing). But how¡¯s this for low cost: You don't even need a trailer! These rugged little pocket rockets are small enough to carry under one arm and fit in a car trunk.
