Moore’s Law defines the history of technology. It held that the number of circuits etched on a given piece of silicon could double every 18 months as far as its author, Intel co-founder Gordon Moore, could see. Moore’s Law has spawned constant revolutions since then, not just in computing but in communications, in science, in a host of areas. Moore’s Law applies to radios, and to optical fiber, but there are some areas where it doesn’t apply. In this blog we’ll take a daily look at new implications of Moore’s Law in real time, as it rolls forward to create our future.

Your Move, Yahoo

Google has quickly countered Yahoo's purchase of Oddpost by snapping up Picasa, which specializes in digital photo management. (The image is from Picasa's site.)

While the Yahoo-Oddpost deal looks straightforward, the Google-Picasa deal has several levels.

  • Picasa was already helping Google manage images on its Blogger service.
  • Picasa can assist Google in managing images worldwide through its Google Images service.
  • Picasa could also help Google get into picture-hosting, a business now dominated by photo processors but which could absorb tons of storage, which Google has in abundance.

Your move, Yahoo, but I'd say it's advantage, Google.

True, the picture hosting business is saturated by photo processors. But Google Picasa and CNET Webshots are consumer oriented services for amateur photography. I tried researching for similar professional grade photo portfolio service, came across Site4view Portfolio Courier, something else, but overall very slim. I wonder if that is a good niche for major players to move into.
